HK developed a series of codes to help identify their military/law enforcement firearms. Using their 2 number codes, it is possible to identify the type of firearm (belt-fed machinegun, submachinegun, etc) and the caliber. Here is how the code system breaks out:

The VP9 is a polymer frame striker fired pistol that looks like a cross between a Glock, Walther P99, Smith and Wesson M&P and HK USP. It has a sleek modern look, with front cocking serrations, removable rear cocking wings, firing pin indicator, interchangeable grip panels and low profile ambidextrous controls. • The VP9SK mags hold 10 rounds, but the pistol works with larger-capacity HK magazines- specifically those designed for the VP9 and P30, both 13- and 15-rounders. Shooting the VP9 SK was utterly uneventful. Well, uneventful as far as recoil and reliability were concerned.

Naturally, there are combos of the first and second number that (as much as we might want one) would produce an HK firearm model number that doesn't (or won't ever) exist. For example: the HK59, the BIG brother of the MP5.. :-)

There have been model number changes over the years, most notably the models 91 and 93. They were originally imported as the 41 and 43, respectively, and if you look at the coding, you'll see they are identified as 'Paramilitary' rifles -- which to this day I maintain that they are. They are not 'Assault Rifles' (which is a media term).

HK Date Codes

Date codes are the next thing that cause a little confusion for new HK owners. Like the model numbering scheme, the date codes are a 2 letter code and indicate the year of manufacture:

Now that we have that squared away, I have to note that it appears that HK has changed their date coding for post-ban LE/military magazines, and there hasn't been any definitive documentation to indicate what this is.

1989? That was when Bush's import ban stopped further import, no? I'd
suspect the last rifles to make it in would have been somewhat older
though, allowing for some time in the pipeline as it were.

The commercial H&K magazines are dated similarly to the rifles; I think
'J' can be used for the date code on the magazines, or some such?
Military magazines are usually stamped with the month and year of
production, and the symbol for the maker (HK, Rhinemetall, etc).

The '87 in a circle' sounds like a molding date. Many plastic molding
companies use a changeable peg in their molds to indicate the date (or
other information) that an item was cast. Take a look at a milkcrate, the
hidden surface of a plastic auto part or so forth..

Xpfildrvr1224 320 Zip. Windows doesn't allow seeing partitions on removable media (USB, SD card, etc.). One way to make this possible is to modify the driver. Here is an example on how to do it for a USB drive, but I think it could also be used for an SD card. One needs to download a Hitachi filter driver for removing the Removable Media Bit - xpfildrvr1224320.zip By modifying the included INF file the filter driver can be used with any other 'removable' drive.
